57. Offerings for Devi- coconut as bali.

Verse 57

வையப்பா சாதமொடு மதுமாம்சங்கள்

மைந்தனே பாலொடு சர்க்கரையுந் தேனும்

செய்யப்பா தேங்காயும் பலிதானிட்டு

தித்திக்குங் கனிவகைகள் எல்லாம் வைத்து

பொய்யப்பா சொல்லாமல் விஞ்சை ஓதிப்

புத்திரனே சவ்வாதும் புனுகுஞ் சாத்து

மெய்யப்பா வாடை பரிமளங்கள் எல்லாம்

வேண்டியே தேவிக்கு வைத்துப் போற்றே

Translation:

Place son, along with cooked rice, alcohol and meat

Son, along with milk, sugar and honey

Perform bali with the coconut

Place all varieties of sweet fruits

Without lying, recite the verses

Son, adorn the fragrances of javvaadhu and punuku

True son, place all the fragrances

For Devi and praise her.

Commentary:

The first line surprises us when we read that Subramanyar tells Agatthiyar to place meat and alcohol as offerings.  Meivazhi Goundar says that it would not be the conventional meat and alcohol as Subramanyar reprimands those who kill lives in later verses.  He splits the word maamsam as maa+a+sam which means great water and bliss or poornam.  One wonders whether alcohol and meat were allowed as part of worship ritual or whether Subramanyar refers to something else through these words.  He says that sugar, milk and honey should be offered along with sweet fruits.  Coconut should be broken as a bali.  Coconut signifies our skull.  Breaking the coconut means releasing the chithakasam within the body to merge with the perandam outside.  The water and space within the coconut merge with the outer space when it is broken.  Specific prayers should be utter truthfully and fragrances such as Javvaadu and punuku should be adorned.  Punuku is the fragrance collect from civet cat and Javvaadu is also from an animal belonging to the cat family. 

இப்பாடலின் முதல் வரியில் சுப்பிரமணியர் தேவிக்குப் படைக்கப்பட வேண்டிய பொருட்களைக் கூறும்போது மது மாம்சம் என்று கூறியிருப்பது புதிராக உள்ளது.  பின்னே வரும் பாடல்களில் உயிர்களைக் கொல்லாமையைப் பற்றியும் புல்லால் உண்ணாமையைப் பற்றியும்  சுப்பிரமணியர் பேசியிருப்பதால் இதன் பொருள் என்ன என்பது புரியவில்லை.  உரையாசிரியர் மெய்வழிக் கவுண்டர் மாம்சம் என்பதை மா+அம்+சம் என்று பிரித்து மகா நீர் மற்றும் காற்று என்று பொருள் கூறுகிறார்.  இதனை அடுத்து சுப்பிரமணியர், தேவிக்கு சர்க்கரை, தேன், பால் முதலியவற்றையும் இனிய பழங்களையும் படிக்கவேண்டும் என்று கூறுகிறார்.  தேங்காயை பலியாகக் கொடுக்கவேண்டும் என்று அவர் கூறியிருப்பது மற்றொரு விஷயத்தை நமது கவனத்துக்குக் கொண்டு வருகிறது.  இறைவனுக்குத் தேங்காய் உடைப்பது என்பது ஒரு முக்கியமான சடங்காகும்.  தேங்காய் என்பது நமது கபாலத்தைக் குறிக்கிறது.  அதனுள் இருக்கும் இடம் சிதாகாசம் அல்லது சிற்றம்பலம் எனப்படுகிறது.  அதனை உடைப்பது என்பது சித்தாகாசத்தை பேராகாசம் அல்லது பேரண்டத்துடன் சேர்ப்பதைக் குறிக்கிறது.  இவ்வாறு தேங்காயை உடைப்பது என்பது நமது கபாலத்தை உடைப்பதற்கு ஒக்கும்.  அதனால்தான் சுப்பிரமணியர் அதைப் பலி என்று கூறுகிறார்.  அதனை அடுத்து தேவிக்கான மந்திரங்களையும் ஓதி புனுகு சவ்வாது என்பது போன்ற நறுமணப் பொருட்களைப் படைக்கவேண்டும் என்று சுப்பிரமணியர் கூறுகிறார்
